| Top Gear star Richard Hammond got to his feet and walked, just 30 hours after his high-speed crash. The 36-year-old is in a stable condition at Leeds General Infirmary where friends and family have been keeping a bedside vigil following Wednesday's accident at Elvington airfield, near York.
Clarkson, Hammond's co-presenter of the motoring show, said: "In the wee small hours of Thursday night, just 30 hours after what is almost certainly the world's fastest ever car crash, Richard Hammond suddenly sat up in bed, opened his eyes and asked what had happened." Clarkson, who told him he had been in a car accident, said that Hammond then got out of bed and walked shakily to the lavatory.
The presenter was seriously injured when the jet-powered car he had been driving at speeds up to 300mph crashed.

| I'm quite sad about poor RIchard, but by the sounds of it, he's going to be ok. I hope he recovers, becasue he also presents Brainiac - Science abuse, and I would miss that if it was gone! | |

| “You’ve been in a car accident,” I said. “Was I driving like a tw*t?” he asked, before getting out of bed and walking, shakily, to the lavatory. His wife, Mindy, couldn’t believe her eyes. None of us could. It really did seem that he’d had a look through death’s door and decided he didn’t like what he saw on the other side. Later, he looked across at James May and said: “Hello C**k face.” Despite all the odds, it seemed we’d got our Hamster back . . . Same cut as admin i think, but the last couple of lines just sum what a joker he was. Defo agree with everyone else i love top gear and hope it continues even though it wont be the same without hammond if he cant go back. I also loved the show thing that he had it was a well funny. Oh and the whole teeth whitening thing aswell! | |

| A lot of commentators have slammed BBC's Top Gear in the past week since Richard Hammond's crash, saying the show encourages dangerous driving. There are rumours that the BBC may even axe the show.
We want to know what you think

| It would be wrong to stop the show. Only idiots who were impressionable and irresponsible would try and drive like that in an environment when it would put other people in danger. We know it's just a television show! And I'm sure anyone else who watches it knows that too, there would be no reason to axe it just because they believe it to be encouraging people to drive like lunatics. Do they think the majority of the British popluation are insane or something? Silly people... | |

| The BBC may screen the crash which nearly killed Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond. Bosses plan to make a special programme about the accident if Hammond agrees.
No-one has asked Richard while he is still in hospital. Everyone is keen to make sure he doesn't feel pressured into anything. But those who know him well believe he will be happy to do it.
The aim is not to be gruesome but to show all the preparations. Then we'll look at what went wrong and perhaps learn lessons. Hammond was driving a jet-powered dragster car when it crashed at speeds of up to 300mph at Elvington airfield, near York. The stunt was being filmed for a new series of the BBC1 show. The 36-year-old presenter suffered brain injuries and is recovering in hospital. Doctors say it will be six months before he is "back to his old self".
